They had these in several versions, actually! Started out with black vinyl rims and buttons, or metal buttons, on Corvette and Camaro. Possibly on first generation Firebird too, not sure? These were the 3 spoke, with a tapered triangle slot in each spoke. The 4 spoke was an Olds thing, on the Cutlass and 442. These also started out black. The early ones are a larger diameter than the later ones, and the points where the rim meets the spokes are made differently. This picture is the later style, and those are the ones available in colors. This red, a caramel tan, and close to Wedgewood blue.
Some of the blues fade to almost a blue/gray, and all three colors fade somewhat. I've only seen the early 4 spoke in black. The 3 spoke was available in the red/blue/tan versions as well.
I used to find these in the late 80s and into the 90s in the local yards, in the Monza/Skyhawk cars, and the Olds equivalent. I carried the tools to remove them, and could have one off a car and properly reassembled in less than five minutes. To get it off the column undamaged, you have to pull the horn button and hardware/contacts, and remember we're dealing with 40 year old plastic....so a bit of care is required.
I still have a few of the extra buttons, but no more wheels. I also have some flat plastic blank inserts for the buttons, so you can have a "clean" look or use your own emblem. I believe some of the Corvette/Camaro repop parts sellers have the horn parts, buttons too but those are not cheap.
Dad had the 3 spoke, color matched with the interior, in several of our square body trucks and Burbs. All our 400s have been airbag era trucks, so no steering wheel customization available (not what I can afford anyway, and nothing's wrong with the stock ones).
