20-something years with a Snap-On MTG2500, when that got damaged, I moved up a couple of generations to the Snappy Solus Pro. (Both purchased used from sellers on eBay, at a fraction of the "new" price.)

The ancient '2500-series scan tools are useful and workable if you have appropriate software cartridges for the vehicle you're working on--but the graphing is either non-existant (MT2500) or crude (MTG2500).

The ability to graph (view sensor output waveforms) is VERY handy, especially if you can view two or more sensors at the same time.

And Bi-directional control--using the scan tool to request the computer perform certain functions--is also essential.

Moreover, a "professional grade" scan tool should be able to communicate with the engine, transmission, ABS, Air Bags (SRS), traction control, instrument cluster--anything controlled by an on-board computer. Many "consumer-grade" tools will talk to the engine only, or perhaps engine, transmission, and limited effectiveness with ABS or air bags.
