    The one in the photo is my bleeding one. I've another shorter one for closing off the MC. Steering wheel moves, as does a seat if that's used instead so there's some adjustability! Or maybe I'm overselling the simple stick...

    Worth remembering though that diesel efficiency isn't only from increased CR and minimised pumping losses but is in no small part from the reduced (overall) combustion temperatures due to the considerable excess air which reduces heat loss to coolant.

    For future - use something like in the photo below to push the MC to a position where its outlet ports are closed. That prevents the MC draining down and does it without risk of damage to hoses.

    When you say 'undergeared', do you mean numerically lower FD - eg, a 3.42FD is more undergeared than a 4.11?

    Under duress - father at my back - doing a service and general check on a VW my sister had just bought, I pulled the plug to check the gearbox oil level. And heard a clunk as the reverse selector mechanism dropped into the gearbox as the level plug wasn't the level plug but part of the reverse...

    Someone else will advise if 4L-60Es behave the same. Are your upshifts hard though? Kick you in the back as they occur?

    Which transmission do you have? My 4L-80E behind a 5.7 Vortec gives hard upshifts without the MAF sensor. Unpleasant, but worse is that the transmission without MAF sensor runs at full line pressure all the time (default setting when no MAF sensor data available to ECU).

    And how's it running? If it's in good health, my advice is to do nothing more that keep it that way (expect to change inlet manifold gaskets though). IMO, mass produced engines are configured to be the best compromise of many conflicting aspects. Occasionally there is low lying fruit to be had...

    Flares were an option then - but that box went unticked when my 'Burb was ordered. A simple answer to a question that's been rattling in my head for an age. Still amazes me that you guys get away with 'poke' (to use your own expression). No such word for it here in the UK as it's not permitted...
